The Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library has a long, established working relationship with the Department of English through its liaison and outreach program to build collections suitable for curricular integration, its hosting of the occasional reading, and its instruction in information literacy. The Missoula writing community flourishes with both new and well-published authors-in-residence, healthy local bookstores, multiple reading series, the Missoula Writing Collaborative, and the annual Festival of the Book.

The room had the potential to provide casual seating, study tables, and presentation space that could be easily adjusted to accommodate varying sizes and types of activities.
