I mentioned that I grew up reading Ewoks comics and similar fare—these were materials that were intended to be ephemeral. You read ’em, you toss ’em. End of story. Yet soon people started to ascribe a great deal of value to those comics that used to have seemingly little or no value. The artistic merits of a Superman or Batman comic book entered the conversation. But there are other kinds of comics as well. Artists began working in the comic and graphic novel field with purposefully high-quality products produced with a great deal of care and effort in terms of their story and the illustrations.
The number that will prove most interesting to community and library boards, however, is the number of library materials checked out in a given month. With that in mind, the temptation is to provide only materials that the public will read and watch voraciously.
