When you crawl into your sleeping bag the fill beneath your body is compressed to virtually nothing, allowing rapid transfer of heat away from you and into the ground. A pad eliminates this, as well as the stiffness that comes from sleeping directly on the ground. GOOD GEAR = GOOD TRIP Other acceptable pads are closed-cell types or open-cell encased in nylon.
